A 17-year-old Illinois teen who confessed to torturing a puppy by slashing its neck may be charged as an adult for the crime.
The unnamed teen got that bad news on Friday in Henry County Juvenile Court, WQAD-TV reports. In a statement, State’s Attorney Matt Schutte’s office said prosecutors had filed a motion to have the case “transferred out of Juvenile Court and to prosecute the alleged offender as an adult, and has already prepared the necessary paperwork requesting such transfer.”
According to KWQC-TV, the puppy — a Labrador retriever and pit bull mix estimated to be seven or eight weeks old — was found outside the Lakeland Terrace Housing Project in Kewanee, Illinois on Tuesday night.
WQAD-TV reported that the dog sustained four slashes to the throat; one, which was almost two inches deep, just missed a main artery.
On Wednesday evening, Kewanee police announced they had arrested a 17-year-old and that he had confessed the torture, the Quad Cities Dispatch Argus reported. He’s been charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
“It was the worst sight I had ever seen,” said Kellie Wallace, director of the Kewanee Chapter of the Henry County Humane Society, according to QConline. She said she had gotten a message about the puppy when it was found on Tuesday night and arrived at the Kewanee Animal Clinic when it opened Wednesday morning to treat the dog.
“I’m just sad, in this day and age, how anyone could hurt a dog like that,” Wallace said.
Wallace said that in addition to the torture, the puppy was infested with fleas and had an eye problem.
“We’re calling him ‘Thor’ for strength,” she said. “For a day, a day and a half, he had no food, no water. He must have had a very strong will to live.”
Wallace told WQAD she didn’t want the teen to just get a slap on the wrist.
“It ends here: we want stricter laws, we do not want this kid just to get community service,” Wallace said.
If this kid were tried as an adult, aggravated animal cruelty is a Class 4 felony in Illinois, which carries a sentenceof one to three years in prison and a possible $25,000 fine.
That’s definitely not community service — and if prosecutors get their way, it could mean some very bad news for this alleged torturer. Good. If he committed this heinous crime, he deserves it.
Most people cherish their dogs, and for good reason. The animal really is man’s best friend. Abusing a puppy like this is a horrible crime that deserves horrible punishment.
