When two cops raised their firsts in the air and kneeled with a Chicago activist, they definitely got a lot of “likes;” however, when they walked into work the next day, they were reprimanded and reminded that their job is to protect and serve, not make political statements.
According to The New York Daily News, activist Aleta Clark posted a photo of her kneeling with two police officers inside of a Chicago police station with the following caption, “That Moment when you walk into the police station and ask the Men of Color are they Against Police Brutality and Racism & they say Yes… then you ask them if they support Colin Kapernick… and they also say yes… then you ask them to Kneel.!”
In the wake of the massive NFL protests, and the backlash many have received for kneeling during the national anthem at the sporting event, this photo was primed and poised to receive a lot of commentary.
The resulting photo received about 2,500 likes after it was posted on Sunday and effectively went viral. However, once the Chicago Police Department was alerted to the photo, the officers got some commentary they were not expecting.
Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, sent an email to The Chicago Tribune, saying, “We are aware of the photo and we will address it in the same way we have handled previous incidents in which officers have made political statements while in uniform, with a reprimand and a reminder of department policies.”
Apparently, the police officers forgot about the explicit rules that denote they are prohibited from being involved in political activity while in uniform.
“Department members are prohibited from participating in ANY partisan political campaign or activity while on duty, including but not limited to distributing campaign literature or wearing or displaying political paraphernalia,” the policy clearly states.
Now these officers are probably embarrassed that they posed for the photo in direct violation of their policy, but what is worse is that they were given a warning and could face losing their jobs all over a viral stunt.
Not surprisingly, mayor Rahm Emanuel was a bit more forgiving of the police officers, saying, “They were somewhat betwixt, between two different aspirations.”
He added that rules are rules, saying, “The policy of the Police Department is consistent, I can say this.”
This is what happens when being involved with something that is “trending” supersedes and takes priority over common sense. These police officers, who are sworn to protect their citizens, lost sight of their main objective, and now their jobs are in limbo.
It is just not worth it.
