Is there anything worse than a smug, self-righteous, loud-mouthed person? I think not. After a vegan from Pennsylvania mocked the 59 “meat-eaters” who died in Las Vegas over the weekend, karma quickly reared its ugly head, and she’s not laughing anymore.
In the wake of last Sunday’s mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, Americans have offered an outpouring of support for the nearly 60 victims who lost their lives and the hundreds of others who were injured in the massacre. Some stood in line for hours to donate their own blood as wounded concertgoers were treated, and others made monetary donations through GoFundMe and other channels.
On the local level, communities have come together to offer support to victims from all over the U.S. who were shot when 64-year-old gunman Stephen Craig Paddock opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Whether it be through meal trains or local fundraisers, everyone has stepped up like never before in response to the most deadly mass shooting our country has ever endured. Well, almost everyone.
In every situation, there is an irreverent jerk who just can’t keep their big mouth shut, and in this situation, it’s vegan food truck operator Delinda Jensen. In a Monday night Facebook post, the owner of Mother Nature Vegan Cuisine wrote, “Yes I am jaded. Fifty nine meat eaters dead. How many animals will live because of this?” She then made a comment under the post which read, “I don’t give a (expletive) about carnists anymore.”
According to BizPacReview, the backlash which ensued was swift and fierce. Hundreds of Facebook users shared Jensen’s post, leaving hate-filled comments for the smug business owner — or former business owner, I should say.
Only days after making the stupidest comment of her life, Jensen has already been forced to close up shop, stow her food truck in a secret location, presumably for fear of it being destroyed by enraged citizens, and hole up in her house. She said she is now living in fear and has installed a security camera system for protection. Locals have been driving by Jensen’s home on Mill Street in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, shouting threats and obscenities, forcing the 60-year-old to call the police several times.
Now out of business and fearing for her safety, Jensen tried to walk back her incendiary comments, but to no avail. “I (expletive) up,” she told the Times Leader while sitting at her kitchen table with her 28-year-old son and business partner, Kyle. “Was it poorly written? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Yes. I am so sorry I wrote that.” She added, “Meat eaters or not, no one deserves to die like that. I wasn’t celebrating the death of those people. That’s not how vegans think — we are non-violent.”
Ironically, now that Jensen is living in constant fear, she knows a bit more about what the victims in Las Vegas endured as they were fired upon like fish in a barrel and sent running for their lives. Isn’t it funny how karma works?
