Hero Down: Rockford Police Officer Jaimie Cox Murdered Overnight
Rockford, IL – Rockford Police Officer Jaimie Cox, age 30, was killed during a traffic stop on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred just after 1 AM on Sunday near East State Street and Dawn Avenue in Rockford, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Officer Cox was on a traffic stop, when he made a brief radio transmission that “he needed help”.
Officers rushed to help Officer Cox, who was found critically injured upon their arrival, near a single-vehicle crash about two blocks north of the traffic stop.
He was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was pronounced dead.
A second body, who was unidentified, was found dead in the cruiser.
It is not known if Officer Cox died from injuries in the traffic crash or if he was shot.
Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea would not release the official cause of death for either Officer Cox or the second person, but did say that they believe a shooting had occurred. He also would not comment on whether any arrests had been made, according to The Chicago Sun-Times .
Chief O’Shea said, “The investigation is still ongoing and very active. We do not believe we have any public at risk at this point. The area is still blocked off from the incident. The detectives are out there working … As far as suspects, we don’t feel the public is in jeopardy right now.”
He added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jamie, Jamie’s family and his wife.”
Officer Cox had joined the Rockford Police Department in December, 2016. He had previously served as an officer for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
